As a commonly used equipment in industrial production and life, water pumps are widely used in various fields. The operation of water pumps is inseparable from the drive of motors, so choosing a suitable matching motor is crucial to ensure the normal operation of water pumps. Water pump manufacturer HNYB PUMP will introduce in detail how to choose the matching motor for water pumps from all aspects for buyers' reference.

1. Select the motor type
According to the different requirements of the pump, the common motor types are AC motors and DC motors, horizontal motors and vertical motors. AC motors usually use asynchronous motors and synchronous motors, which have the advantages of high power and torque, and are suitable for most pumps; DC motors have the characteristics of wide speed regulation range, simple structure, good starting and braking performance, and are suitable for pumps under some special working conditions. Choose a horizontal or vertical motor according to the structure of the pump.
2. Determine the motor power
The motor power is closely related to the flow rate, head and efficiency of the pump. Usually, when selecting and matching the motor for the water pump, we will use the formula to calculate the shaft power of the pump. If the shaft power is less than 15 kWh, we will multiply the shaft power by 1.25 times the power factor to determine the matching prime mover (motor) power; between 15 and 55 kW, multiply by 1.15 times; greater than 55 kWh, multiply by 1.1 times to determine the motor power. In general, the greater the power, the greater the pump's delivery capacity, but also be careful not to choose too much power, so as not to cause problems such as waste of resources and unstable operation. According to the flow rate and head of the pump, the appropriate power can be determined by the motor power calculation formula.
3. Consider motor voltage, altitude, and protection level
- When selecting a water pump motor, you should also consider the appropriate voltage and power matching, and jointly determine whether to use a low-voltage motor or a high-voltage motor based on the voltage at the customer's site. Generally speaking, low-voltage motors are used for motors below 355 KW, generally 380V, and in a few cases 660V, while high-voltage motors are used for motors above 355KW, which are generally 6kv and 10kv in China. Of course, there are also a few cases where there is no high-voltage power supply at the customer's site, but the power of the motor is greater than 355 KW. At this time, the motor manufacturer is required to customize it, which is not within the scope of this article.
- The motor of the supporting water pump should also consider the altitude of the ground. Generally, ordinary motors can be used when the altitude is lower than 1000 meters, and special high-altitude motors should be used when the altitude is higher than 1000 meters.
- In addition, due to the variety of on-site use environments of pumps, the protection level of the motor needs to be selected according to the on-site conditions, that is, waterproof, dustproof, explosion-proof, and corrosion-resistant capabilities. For example, coal mines should choose explosion-proof motors, and most chemical industries also have clear requirements for corrosion resistance.
In summary, choosing the right motor for the pump is the key to ensuring the normal operation of the pump. Choosing the motor type, determining the motor power, considering the motor voltage, altitude, protection level, etc, are all factors that need to be considered comprehensively when choosing a pump motor. Only by choosing the right motor can the stable operation of the pump be guaranteed, production efficiency can be improved, and operating costs can be reduced.
