How Does a Self-Priming Water Pump Work?

 

Self-Priming Water Pumps

The self-priming capability of the pump stems from its reservoir, which retains liquid after the initial priming. During the priming process, air enters the pump from the suction line and mixes with the liquid at the impeller to form a pumpable mixture. The high-speed rotation of the impeller creates a vacuum, forcing air to the top while pushing liquid down into the reservoir within the pump casing. The liquid separates from the air bubbles, increasing in density, and flows back into the impeller chamber, where it mixes with the remaining air from the suction line. This cycle repeats continuously until all air is evacuated and the pump is fully primed with liquid. Once fully primed, the pump begins its normal operation and discharges the liquid.
